Retail Market Case Study

An Australian retail clothing chain, situated in New South Wales is considering for an expansion into one of the three areas (namely Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia). They wanted to assess the business environment for these areas.

Findings from Competitor Analysis:

1. There are outliers in NSW, Queensland and Victoria. There are companies which are under performing in terms of overall performance in that specific States.
2. In Queensland, there are companies which are over performing in that specific States.
3. New South Wales and Victoria has the highest median followed by Queensland.
4. New South Wales and Western Australia has high variance, there is less certainty that random companies thrown to this States will be performing at the median profit margin.
5. In Victoria, the box-plot is compact and less uncertain. The median is higher than Queensland. The box plot is close to the upper range.

Findings from Industry Analysis

1. In this industry, all the states have upward trend.
2. The time series data shows that there is a seasonality, a spike is seen in the month of December and January when people are buying gifts and a blip in February where generally people are paying off their credit card bills.
3. The turnover are given in millions and taking into account that States have different population, we move into Sales/Capita.
4. The Sales/Capita growing is visible only in Victoria and New South Wales.
The upward trend we saw in Queensland and Western Australia are no longer visible, meaning that they were partially attributed to their growth in population.
5. We can forecast the future for three years in Victoria with 95% prediction Interval.

We finally make two conclusions from this analysis:

1. The business environment in Victoria is similar to New South Wales, where the company has experiences.
2. The growth we see in Victoria is not only attributed to simply the growth in population but also growth in people's demand and expenditure within this industry.
This shows that Victoria has high potential for future growth and these are the solid points for the stakeholders to go ahead with Victoria.
